The spike stitch is an easy way to create a wavy effect that makes some think of an ecg. It is made up of single crochets, elongated single crochets, and slip stitches.
For a spike stitch item you will want to use at least 3 different colors.
With color A, make a beginning chain that is in multiples of 6 + 2.
Row 1: SC in 2nd chain from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1 and turn.
Rows 2-4: SC in each stitch across. Fasten off color A.
Row 5: Attach color B in the first stitch of the row. Ch 1 and then slip stitch into the same stitch. *In the next stitch you will do a SC, but you will insert your hook into the SC in the row below. In the next stitch you will do a SC, but you will insert your hook into the SC 2 rows below. In the next stitch you will do a SC, but you will insert your hook into the SC 3 rows below. In the next stitch you will do a SC, inserting the hook 2 rows below. In the next stitch you will do a SC, inserting your hook one row below. In the next stitch you will do a slip stitch.* Repeat from * to * to the end of the row, ending on a slip stitch. Ch 1 and turn.
(Make sure your tension isn’t incredibly tight or it will bunch up the rows below too much. You want your elongated stitches to be loose enough to not bunch, but not too loose that they will snag on something.)
Row 6 – 8: SC in FLO of each stitch across. Ch 1 and turn. At the end of row 8, Fasten off color B.
Rows 9 – 12: Attach color C and repeat rows 5 – 8.
Continue the pattern, changing your colors every 5th row.
When finishing your item, you will want to end it on a row 4.
