3D Granny Block Blanket

This blanket is 6 ft x 6 ft. It is made of 36 granny square blocks that are connected in a “join as you go” style, but you can make all of the blocks ahead of time, minus the final round (Aran). In the materials I have listed the yarns I used and the approximate amount of yarn.

Materials

size H crochet hook

Worsted weight yarn in 8 colors: Color A – Red Heart Jumbo Super Saver White – one 14 oz. skein, Color B – Red Heart Super Saver Dusty Grey – two 7 oz. skeins, Color C – Red Heart Super Saver Charcoal – two 7 oz. skeins, Color D – Red Heart Jumbo Super Saver Black – one 14 oz. skein, Color E – Red Heart Jumbo Super Saver Navy Blue – one 14 oz. skein, Color F – Main Stays Blue – two 7 oz. skeins (I do believe Red Heart has a blue that is also close to this, but I used what I had on hand at the time), Color G – Red Heart Jumbo Super Saver Light Blue – one 14 oz. skein, Color H – Red Heart Jumbo Super Saver Aran – one 14 oz. skein AND one 7 oz. skein (You will have some left over, but 14 oz. is not enough).

Joining blocks

BLOCK 1: With Color H, join in ch 1 space just to the left of the final DC of the row below, ch 6 (counts as DC and ch 3), ch 1, {3 DC, ch 1} in next 8 ch 1 spaces, {3 DC, ch 3, 3 DC} in ch 3 space, {3 DC, ch 1) in next 8 ch 1 spaces, {3 DC, ch 3, 3 DC} in ch 4 space, {3 DC, ch1} in next 8 spaces, {3 DC, ch 3, 3 DC} in next ch 3 space, {3 DC, ch 1} in next 8 spaces, 2 DC in beginning space, join with slip stitch to 3rd ch of beginning ch 6. Fasten off.

BLOCK 2: Start off the joining row of your next block the same way up to the 8th 3 DC. Ch 1, {3 DC, ch 1} in ch 3 space. with right sides out on both pieces, making sure that both blocks are positioned in the same way, slip st into the 3 ch space of adjoining block, ch 1, 3 DC in same ch 3 space of block you are working on. {Slip stitch into coordinating ch 1 space on adjoining block, 3 DC in ch 1 space} across until you reach the next corner. {3 DC, ch 1} in corner space. Slip stitch into ch 3 space of adjoining block, ch 1. Finish final round as same as block 1.

ROW 2 OF BLOCKS: Depending on how you plan to join them, you will either do a second join on the top or bottom of the block you are working on. I find it easier to join in rows, as it keeps the joining corners from getting too messy or confusing.

JOINING CORNERS OF 3 BLOCKS:

If joining to the row above: Join color H into the the block you are attaching. Instead of starting with ch 6, you will start with ch 4. You are then going to slip stitch into the ‘join’ of the two blocks above. Slip stitch into the ch 3 space in the block directly above the one you are working on, ch 1, 3 DC in same space, continue on with join as usual to next corner. 3 DC in ch 3 space, ch 1, slip st into ch 3 of block directly above, slip stitch into the join of the 3 blocks above and to the left, slip st into the ch 3 space of the block to the left, ch 1, 3 DC in same ch 3 space, continue on with join as usual.

The “join” of blocks is this little stitch that is created by the first slip stitch corner join. It looks like an open knot, or kind of like a floating sc. Joining this way will give it a nice 4 open-point look when completed.

Border

I chose to do a simple 2-round border of SC.

Round 1: Join Aran in any corner ch 3 space and ch 1. 2 SC in space. * SC in every DC and ch 1 space across to next corner. {2 SC, ch 2, 2 SC} in ch 3 space. * Repeat from * to * around to beginning ch 3 space. 2 SC in ch 3 space, ch 2, join to beginning SC.

Round 2: ch 1.* SC in every SC across up to ch 2 space. 3 SC in ch 2 space.* Repeat * to * around to beginning. Join with slip st to beginning SC.

  1. I have wanted, somuch, to make this blanket. Thank you for the clear directions pattern! It is my next project. Have 3 to finish when the weather cools!
Will let you know! And I love the blue one!!!!

  2. I am having trouble joining. When I get to “{Slip stitch into coordinating ch 1 space on adjoining block, 3 DC in ch 1 space} across until you reach the next corner. {3 DC, ch 1} in corner space.,” I get stuck. Should I be flipping to add to block one. Or joining to a third block?

    1. I guess that depends on where you are in the blanket. Once you are on the second row and second column of blocks, you will be flipping 90 degrees to join onto the third block.

    2. Did you get this figured out? I’m also having an issue understanding the logistics. I’m pretty sure I’m making it much harder than necessary!

      1. If you are at a place where you are joining a block to both bottom and the side, you will first join to the square below. In the corner where all 3 meet, you are going to 3 DC in the square you are working on, ch 1, then slip stitch into the corner of the block below, then slip stitch into the corner of the block to the side, ch 1, then 3 more DC into the square you are working on, then your remaining attaching will be along the block to the side. I know it seems kind of confusing. It is not absolutely necessary to join blocks this way. You could also do a complete final round on each block and join them all by whip stitching or other methods of attaching. I just much prefer join as you go, as I despise having to sew all the blocks together.
