This pattern can be used to crochet any size of round spiral blanket from babies to adults, or can be used to crochet a rug.
I crocheted my blanket for 40 rounds, but you will see the sequence that is used to make it bigger if you choose, or you can end at any round to make it smaller. At 40 rounds, using worsted weight yarn and a size H hook, my blanket came out to be 4 feet in diameter, a good size for a child or to use as a lap blanket.
Materials needed
8 ounces each of three colors of worsted weight yarn. (I used I Love This Yarn Hot Rose, Black, and White. 8 ounces is for 40 rounds plus the edging).
Size H crochet hook
5 or 6 stitch markers
Yarn needle
Stitch Markers
You will want to use stitch markers that close around the yarn. They will be used to keep your work from unraveling as you work on a different color. They will also be used to help you mark the beginning of rounds. The type shown to the left are my preferred type of stitch markers for this kind of project. If you do not have any stitch markers, but happen to have some small safety pins, they can work as well.
Spiral Blanket Pattern
With Color A (Hot Rose) Chain 4 and slip stitch in 4th chain from hook to form a ring.
Round 1: Chain 3 ( counts as first DC), 3 DC in the ring. Place a stitch marker in your loop and drop Color A. Join Color B (Black) to the ring and chain 3 (counts as first DC), 3 DC in ring. Place a stitch marker in the your loop and drop Color B. Repeat same process for Color C (White). Pull the tail from your ring to make the stitches as close as possible.
Round 2: Pick up Color A. Place 2 DC in each of the 4 black DCs. Put a stitch marker in the first of these DC to mark the beginning of the round. Using a stitch marker, drop A. Pick up Color C. Place 2 DC in the first 4 pink DC of the beginning round. Put a stitch marker in the first of these DC. (As your rounds get bigger, this process will help you keep track of where your Color B stitches will end). Using a stitch marker, drop Color C, and pickup Color B. Place 2 DC in each of the first four white DC of the beginning round. Using a stitch marker, drop color B.
Note: You will be working A, then C, then B, continuously throughout the blanket.
This is what is should look like throughout Round 2. (I do not have the extra stitch markers placed in these images)
You will start to notice as your work that Color A will always stop in the last stitch of the Color B of the previous round.
Round 3: Pick up Color A, *DC in next stitch, INC (2 DC in the same stitch) in the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. (12 rose DC added). Drop A and pickup C. Follow * to * 4 times. (12 white DC added). Drop C and pickup B. Follow * to * 4 times. (12 black DC added). 36 DC total for the round.
Round 4: Pick up A, * Place 1 DC in each of the next two stitches, INC in the next stitch. Repeat from * to * 3 more times. (16 rose DC added). Drop A and pickup C. Follow * to * 4 times. (16 white DC added). Drop C and pickup B. Follow * to * 4 times. (16 black DC added.) 48 DC total for the round.
This is the type of pattern you will follow. Below is a table of each round with number of stitches and where to place the increases. You will be able to see the sequence form to help you continue on to a bigger blanket if you wish. Note that the totals are for that specific round, not the total for the entire blanket.

Finishing the Rounds
At the end of each color on your chosen final round, after the last DC, hdc in the next stitch, sc, in the next stitch, slip st in the next stitch, and fasten off. Do this for all three colors. Use the yarn needle to weave in all of your loose ends.
Edging
An edging for this blanket is not required. To place an edging like mine on it. Join whichever color you choose to any space between 2 DC in the final round below your ending slip stitch where you fastened off the color. Chain 4, skip 3 DC (2 spaces) and slip stitch in to the next space between DC’s. Repeat this all the way around, joining with a slip stitch into your beginning join and fasten off.
Making Alterations to the Pattern
If you want to use fewer colors or more colors, you will follow the same basic rules, but you may want to change the number of stitches you begin with. Refer to my post on The Math of a Crocheted Circle to help you determine how many stitches per round you will need to keep the circular shape.
Also, you will notice that placing the increases in the same place in each round adds a small amount of cornering around the circle. Blocking the blanket once complete will help this some, but if you would like to minimize this effect, you can alter the placement of your increases in every, or every other, round.
Beautiful! You’re very talented!
Thank you so much for writing out every line. It’s incredibly helpful
